The flute is humanity's oldest known instrument — bone flutes have been found dating back 43,000 years. In India, the Bansuri (bamboo flute) is considered the divine instrument of Lord Krishna, and its sound carries a unique quality that no other instrument can replicate: pure, breathy, and infinitely expressive. This guide covers everything you need to start your flute journey in 2026.
Bansuri vs. Western Flute: Which Should You Learn?
Before buying an instrument, understand the two main traditions:
The Bansuri (Indian Bamboo Flute)
The Bansuri is a transverse (side-blown) bamboo flute with 6 or 7 holes and no keys. It is the instrument of Hindustani classical music and produces a warm, breathy tone with extraordinary expressive flexibility. Because it has no keys, the player uses embouchure (lip and breath control) and partial hole coverage to produce microtones — the Shrutis and Gamakas of Indian classical music.
- Pros: Authentic Indian classical sound, highly expressive, affordable (₹500–₹5,000), deeply connected to Indian musical tradition
- Cons: Harder to produce a tone initially, no keys mean all technique must come from breath and finger control
The Western Concert Flute
The Western flute is a metal instrument with a complex system of keys and pads. It is the foundation of Western classical and orchestral music and produces a brighter, more 'silvery' tone than the Bansuri.
- Pros: Easier to produce notes in early stages (keys help), vast repertoire of Western classical music
- Cons: More expensive (₹8,000–₹50,000+), less suited to Indian classical music's microtonal requirements
Our recommendation: If you want to learn Indian classical music or Bollywood melodies, start with a Bansuri. If you aspire to play in orchestras or Western classical repertoire, choose the concert flute.
How to Produce Your First Sound on the Bansuri
The biggest challenge for beginners is producing a clear, sustained tone. Here is the technique used in our online music classes in India:
- Embouchure hole placement: Place the embouchure hole (the blowing hole) against your lower lip, just below the center. The hole should rest on the pink part of your lip, not on the skin.
- Lip shape (aperture): Make a small oval opening with your lips — as if you are saying "P." The air stream should be directed downward at approximately a 45-degree angle across the hole.
- Breath support: Use diaphragmatic breathing — the same technique as vocal training. The air column must be consistent and supported to produce a steady tone.
- Cover all holes first: Before worrying about individual notes, practice producing a clear 'Sa' with all holes covered. This is your foundation.
Most beginners produce a sound within 15–30 minutes of their first practice session. Within a week, the tone should become consistent and clear.
Buying Your First Bansuri: What to Look For
For beginners, we recommend a Bansuri in the key of G or E (medium scale, approximately 50–55 cm long). These keys are easiest to learn on — not too long (which makes hole coverage difficult) and not too short (which produces a very high pitch requiring more precise breath control). Price range: ₹500–₹2,000 for a quality beginner bamboo flute from vendors in Varanasi or Kolkata.
Your First Month: A Practice Plan
- Week 1: Focus entirely on producing a clear, steady tone on Sa (all holes covered). 15 minutes daily.
- Week 2: Add the lower octave notes Pa, Dha, Ni. Practice each until clear.
- Week 3: Learn the full Sargam (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa) ascending and descending slowly.
- Week 4: Play a simple melody — a children's folk song or a simple Bollywood tune by ear.
