Bollywood and the guitar are a perfect match. The melodic, emotive nature of Hindi film music translates beautifully to the fretboard. The great news? You need only 10 chords to play the vast majority of popular Bollywood songs. Here is your complete guide — used in our Online Guitar class at Sukoon Music Academy.
The 5 Open Chords Every Bollywood Guitarist Must Know
These are played in the first three frets and require no barre technique. Learn these first.
1. G Major
Songs: 'Tum Hi Ho' (verse), 'Kal Ho Na Ho', 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi'. The G chord has a bright, open, hopeful sound. It is the foundation of the most common Bollywood progression (G – Em – C – D).
2. C Major
Songs: Nearly every Bollywood song uses C major. It has a warm, stable quality and often acts as the 'home base' chord in a song. Master the switch from G to C as your first priority.
3. D Major
Songs: 'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai', 'Pehla Nasha'. D major has a bright, uplifting sound that works beautifully with Hindi melodies. The chord shape can be tricky at first — focus on keeping your fingers arched so they don't accidentally mute strings.
4. E Minor (Em)
Songs: 'Channa Mereya' (chorus), 'Tum Se Hi'. Em is the easiest chord to play (only two fingers) and is the most emotional chord on the guitar. Combined with G, C, and D, you have the four chords that power hundreds of songs.
5. A Minor (Am)
Songs: 'Dil Chahta Hai', 'Tera Hone Laga Hoon', 'Jeene Laga Hoon'. Am has a deeper melancholy than Em. It is the chord of yearning and longing — perfect for the emotional range of Bollywood.
The 5 Barre Chords That Unlock Every Key
Barre chords are moveable shapes — once you learn the shape, you can play it at any fret to get any chord. These open up the entire fretboard.
6. F Major (Barre at Fret 1)
Songs: 'Raabta', 'Lag Ja Gale'. The dreaded F chord is the first barre chord most guitarists learn. Place your index finger across all 6 strings at fret 1 and form an E-shape with your remaining fingers. It takes time, but once it clicks, it changes everything.
7. B Minor (Bm) (Barre at Fret 2)
Songs: 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', 'Bulleya'. Bm appears constantly in popular Bollywood progressions in the key of D. It has a brooding, intense quality that suits the more dramatic Bollywood ballads.
8. A Major (Barre at Fret 5, E-shape)
Songs: Used when playing in the key of E. Barre at the 5th fret with an E-shape and you have A Major — a bright, punchy chord great for upbeat Bollywood numbers.
9. E Major (Open)
Songs: 'Badtameez Dil', 'Galliyan'. E major is powerful and full-bodied. When used in a Bollywood context, it often signals a moment of triumph or intensity in the song.
10. D Minor (Dm)
Songs: 'Teri Mitti', 'Main Tenu Samjhawan Ki'. Dm is the chord of sorrow and depth. Combined with Am and F, it creates the minor key progressions that underpin India's most emotionally powerful songs.
The 4 Magic Progressions
With these 10 chords, you can play any of these four progressions that cover 80% of Bollywood songs:
- G – Em – C – D (key of G, major feel): 'Tum Hi Ho', 'Kal Ho Na Ho'
- Am – F – C – G (key of C, minor to major): 'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai'
- Em – C – G – D (key of G, emotional minor feel): 'Channa Mereya'
- Dm – Am – F – C (key of D minor, deep and soulful): 'Teri Mitti'
