What is a Vocal Range?
Your vocal range is simply the span of notes from the lowest pitch you can comfortably sing to the highest. Knowing your range is the first step to unlocking your true vocal potential and ensuring you don't damage your vocal cords by straining.
The Four Main Voice Types
- Soprano: The highest female voice type (typically C4 to C6).
- Alto (Mezzo-Soprano): The middle/lower female voice type (typically A3 to A5).
- Tenor: The highest male voice type (typically C3 to B4).
- Bass/Baritone: The middle/lower male voice type (typically E2 to E4).
How to Test Your Range at Home
You can find your range in three easy steps:
- Open up our Virtual Piano tool.
- Find Middle C (C4). Sing this note.
- Slowly play down the white keys, matching pitch, until your voice feels "gravelly" or you can no longer project. This is your bottom note.
- Return to Middle C and sing upwards until your voice naturally flips into falsetto or feels strained. The highest comfortable full-voice note is your top limit.
Why Does This Matter?
Once you know your range, you can transpose songs to fit your voice. Instead of straining to hit a high note like the original artist, you can shift the key down so the song sits perfectly in the "sweet spot" (tessitura) of your voice.
