One of the most common micro-frustrations for beginners in our online guitar classes is dealing with the guitar pick (plectrum). It slips out of your fingers, spins around while you play, or gets stuck on the strings. If you don't learn how to hold it correctly early on, it will severely limit your strumming speed and tone later.
The "Key" Method for Holding a Pick
The easiest way to visualize holding a guitar pick is to imagine you are holding a key to unlock a door.
- The Thumb: Place your picking hand out in front of you. Bend your index finger inward towards your palm.
- The Placement: Place the pick flat against the side of your curled index finger (the side facing your thumb).
- The Grip: Bring your thumb down flat over the top of the pick. The pick should now be sandwiched between the flat pad of your thumb and the side of your index finger.
- The Point: Only the pointy tip of the pick should be sticking out past your thumb—about a quarter of an inch. If too much pick is exposed, it will get caught on the strings.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The "Three-Finger Grip": Many beginners try to hold the pick with their thumb, index, and middle fingers. This restricts wrist movement and makes strumming stiff. Always use just the thumb and index finger.
- Gripping Too Hard: If your knuckles are white, you are holding it too tight. The pick needs a little bit of "give" to glide over the strings. Hold it firmly enough that it doesn't drop, but loosely enough that it can flex.
- The Wrong Angle: When the pick strikes the string, it should hit it at a slight downward angle (about 15 to 30 degrees), not completely flat. Angling the pick allows it to slice through the strings smoothly rather than catching on them.
Pick Thickness Matters
If you are a beginner focusing mostly on strumming open chords, use a thin pick (0.46mm to 0.60mm). Thin picks bend easily, making strumming sound smooth and preventing the pick from being ripped from your fingers.
