The human voice is the only instrument that is also a living, breathing organ. Like any instrument, it responds to consistent, intelligent practice. These 10 daily exercises are the foundation of our online singing classes at Sukoon Music Academy — used by beginners and professionals alike to build strength, control, and expressiveness.
Before You Begin: The Golden Rules
- Never sing cold. Always warm up before any vocal exercise, just as a runner stretches before a sprint.
- Hydrate. Drink warm or room-temperature water before and during practice. Your vocal cords are mucous membranes — they need moisture.
- Stop if it hurts. Discomfort is a signal. Pain is a stop sign. Hoarseness is not a sign of hard work; it is a sign of incorrect technique.
Exercise 1: Diaphragmatic Breathing (5 Minutes)
Lie flat on your back with a book on your stomach. Breathe so the book rises (belly expands) on the inhale and falls on the exhale. The chest should not move. This is the foundation of all breath support. Our Online Vocal Class always begins here.
Exercise 2: Lip Trills (2 Minutes)
Blow air through loosely closed lips to create a 'motor-boat' sound. Slide up and down your pitch range on this sound. It warms up the vocal cords with minimal strain and is ideal for the first 5 minutes of any practice.
Exercise 3: Humming Scales (3 Minutes)
Hum a simple 5-note scale (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Pa Ma Ga Re Sa) with your mouth gently closed. Feel the vibration in your cheekbones and forehead — that is 'mask resonance,' the placement that gives singers their projection and brightness.
Exercise 4: Vowel Sirens (3 Minutes)
Sing an "ah" vowel and slide smoothly from your lowest comfortable note to your highest and back down — like a siren. This exercise bridges your chest voice and head voice, smoothing out the 'break' or 'passaggio' that many singers struggle with.
Exercise 5: Staccato Notes (2 Minutes)
Sing short, detached notes on "hah-hah-hah" across a major scale. This strengthens the diaphragmatic pulse — the muscular flick that powers each note. It also improves rhythmic precision and is excellent for students in online music classes in India learning Bollywood songs with fast syllable patterns.
Exercise 6: The 'Nay Nay Nay' Twang (2 Minutes)
Sing "Nay-Nay-Nay" in an exaggerated, almost nasal, bright tone up and down a scale. This might sound silly, but 'Twang' is one of the most powerful vocal qualities — it adds brightness and carrying power to your voice without increasing volume or effort.
Exercise 7: Sargam Practice (5 Minutes)
Sing Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa-Dha-Ni-Sa slowly, holding each note for 4 counts. Focus on Shruti shuddhi — absolute pitch accuracy. In our Online Hindustani music class, we use this to train the ear and the voice simultaneously.
Exercise 8: Interval Jumps (3 Minutes)
Sing Sa — then jump to Pa (a fifth above). Then Sa — jump to Ni (a seventh). These interval jumps train your voice to land accurately on a target note without sliding up to it, which is a common weakness in beginner singers.
Exercise 9: Sustained 'Mah' Phrases (5 Minutes)
Sing the word "Mah" on a single pitch for as long as possible on one breath, focusing on keeping the tone steady and the volume consistent. This builds breath management and tonal consistency — the two pillars of a professional voice.
Exercise 10: Free Improvisation on Sa (5 Minutes)
Put on a tanpura (or a tanpura app) tuned to your key. Improvise freely on just the notes Sa, Re, Ga, Ma — no rules. This trains your musical instinct and connects the technical work of the previous nine exercises to actual musical expression. It is the bridge between exercise and art.
