If you are shopping for your first acoustic guitar, you will quickly encounter two very distinct options: guitars with Nylon Strings (Classical guitars) and guitars with Steel Strings (Standard Acoustic guitars). Making the wrong choice here can make learning unnecessarily difficult. Here is the definitive guide from our online guitar class instructors to help you decide.
1. The Feel: Pain Levels and Playability
This is the most crucial factor for a beginner.
- Nylon Strings: These strings are soft, thick, and under lower tension. They are incredibly gentle on uncallused fingers. If you press down on a nylon string, it will barely hurt at all.
- Steel Strings: These are exactly what they sound like—metal wires under high tension. They require significantly more finger strength to push down, and they will cause your fingertips to hurt for the first 2-3 weeks until calluses form.
Winner for comfort: Nylon.
2. The Sound and Tone
- Nylon Strings: Produce a warm, mellow, rounded, and quiet sound. They are traditionally used for Classical music, Flamenco, and Bossa Nova.
- Steel Strings: Produce a bright, loud, crisp, and resonant sound. This is the sound you hear in 99% of Bollywood songs, pop music, rock, and country.
Winner for modern music: Steel.
3. The Neck Width
Look at the neck of both guitars side-by-side.
- Nylon/Classical Guitars: Have a very wide, flat neck. This gives your fingers plenty of room so you don't accidentally mute adjacent strings. However, if you have very small hands, the wide neck can be hard to stretch across.
- Steel String Guitars: Have a narrower neck, often with a slight curve (radius). This makes it much easier to wrap your hand around the neck to play chords.
The Verdict: Which Should You Buy?
Many old-school teachers insist beginners start on Nylon strings because "it hurts less." We disagree with this advice.
Unless you specifically want to play Spanish Flamenco or Classical music, you should buy a Steel-String Acoustic Guitar. Why? Because steel strings produce the sound you actually want to make when you strum a pop or Bollywood song. Yes, your fingers will hurt for two weeks, but you will build calluses and get over it. If you buy a nylon string guitar to avoid pain, you will eventually have to transition to steel strings anyway, and you'll have to build those calluses later.
