Proper Piano Posture: How to Sit to Avoid Back Pain While Playing

If your lower back hurts or your forearms burn after 20 minutes of practicing the keyboard, you have a posture problem. Many students in our online keyboard classes struggle with speed and technique simply because they are sitting too high, too low, or slouching. Here are the 5 golden rules of piano posture.

1. The Bench Distance

You should not be sitting flush against the keyboard, nor should you be reaching out with straight arms.

The Test: Sit with your hands resting on the keys. Your elbows should be slightly in front of your torso, and your arms should form a gentle 'L' shape. If your elbows are behind your body, you are sitting too close.

2. The Bench Height

This is where most beginners go wrong. If your forearms slope upwards toward the keys, you are sitting too low. If they slope steeply down, you are too high.

The Rule: Your forearms should be exactly parallel to the floor when your fingers are resting on the keys.

3. Where to Sit on the Bench

Never sit all the way back on a piano bench like it's a sofa. You should only be sitting on the front half (the front 50%) of the bench. This forces your core muscles to engage and keeps your spine straight.

4. The Feet

Your feet should be planted flat on the floor, directly under your knees. They are your anchors. If your feet are dangling (common for children), use a footstool. You cannot play with power if you are not grounded.

5. The Hand Shape (The "Imaginary Apple")

Your hands should never lie flat on the keys with collapsed knuckles. Imagine you are gently holding a small apple or an orange in each hand. Your knuckles should form a bridge, and only the fleshy tips of your fingers should contact the keys.

Correcting your posture feels awkward for the first week, but it instantly cures wrist pain and allows your fingers to move much faster. In our online piano classes at Sukoon Music Academy, our teachers monitor your posture via webcam to ensure you build healthy habits. Book a free trial today!
