How to Protect Your Voice: 5 Vocal Warmups Every Singer Must Know

Your vocal cords are tiny muscles, barely the size of a thumbnail. If an athlete wouldn't dream of deadlifting heavy weights without stretching, why do so many singers attempt to belt out high notes without warming up? Singing "cold" is the fastest way to develop vocal nodules and permanently damage your range.

As the Vocal Head at Sukoon, here are the 5 essential warmups I teach in all our online vocal classes. Doing this 10-minute routine daily will protect your voice and instantly improve your tone.

1. The Lip Trill (The Holy Grail of Warmups)

This is the single most important exercise. Relax your lips and blow air through them so they flap rapidly (like a horse exhaling). While keeping the trill going, hum a gentle siren, sliding from your lowest comfortable note up to your highest, and back down. This equalizes breath pressure and massages the vocal folds.

2. The Humming Siren

Close your lips gently, keeping your teeth slightly apart inside. Hum the "Mmmm" sound, feeling a buzz on your lips and the front of your face. Slowly slide up and down your range. If your throat feels tight, you are pushing too hard. It should feel effortless.

3. Diaphragmatic Breathing Activator

Lie flat on the floor and place a book on your stomach. When you breathe in, the book must rise. When you breathe out, the book must fall. Your chest and shoulders should never move. Stand up and replicate this feeling. This is how you power high notes without straining your throat.

4. The "Nay-Nay" Exercise

Say the word "Nay" in an exaggerated, bratty, nasal witch voice. Sing a simple 5-note descending scale (Pa-Ma-Ga-Re-Sa) using the "Nay" sound. This harsh, nasal sound forces your vocal cords to zip together cleanly, eliminating breathiness and building power in your mixed voice.

5. The Yawn-Sigh

Open your mouth and take a massive, genuine yawn. Feel how the back of your throat (the soft palate) lifts and creates a huge, cavernous space. As you exhale, let out a gentle vocalized sigh from high to low. This teaches you how to keep your throat open and relaxed while singing.
