Raag Malkauns: Notes, Time, Mood, and Famous Songs

Raag Malkauns is one of the most ancient, majestic, and spiritually profound ragas in Hindustani classical music. Known for its deeply meditative and somewhat solemn character, it is said to have been created by Goddess Parvati to calm Lord Shiva after his destructive Tandava dance. It is a cornerstone raga taught in any advanced online Hindustani music class.

The Structure and Notes of Raag Malkauns

Malkauns belongs to the Bhairavi Thaat. It is an Audav-Audav raga, meaning it uses strictly five notes in both its ascent (Aaroha) and descent (Avaroha). It completely omits Re (the second) and Pa (the fifth).

The defining feature of Malkauns is the heavy use of Komal (flat) swaras.

  • Notes used: Sa, Ga(k), Ma, Dha(k), Ni(k)
  • Aaroha: Sa Ga(k) Ma Dha(k) Ni(k) Ṡ
  • Avaroha: Ṡ Ni(k) Dha(k) Ma Ga(k) Sa
  • Vadi (King Note): Ma (Madhyam)
  • Samvadi (Queen Note): Sa (Shadja)

The omission of the stable 'Pa' (Pancham) gives Malkauns an ungrounded, mystical quality. The strong emphasis on 'Ma' creates a feeling of vastness and contemplation.

Time and Mood (Rasa)

Malkauns is a strict late-night raga, traditionally performed between midnight and 3:00 AM. Its mood is one of Veer Rasa (courage) combined with deep Bhakti (devotion) and introspection. It is weighty, serious, and deeply calming, making it perfect for late-night meditation.

Famous Classical Compositions and Bollywood Songs

Because of its powerful melodic structure, Malkauns has been used extensively in both classical performances and Hindi cinema to convey intense emotion, seriousness, or classical purity.

Iconic Bollywood Songs in Raag Malkauns:

  • 'Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj' (Baiju Bawra, 1952): Sung by Mohammed Rafi, composed by Naushad. This is perhaps the most perfect cinematic representation of Malkauns, capturing its deep devotional aspect.
  • 'Aadha Hai Chandma Raat Aadhi' (Navrang, 1959): A beautiful, slightly lighter interpretation by Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor.
  • 'Tu Chhupi Hai Kahan' (Navrang, 1959): Another classic that uses the sweeping glides (Meend) characteristic of the raga.
  • 'Mitwa' (Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, 2006): While not pure Malkauns, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy used its foundational notes to create a modern Sufi-rock masterpiece.

Practice Tips for Raag Malkauns

  1. Master the Meend (Glide): Malkauns relies heavily on slow, sweeping glides, especially from Dha(k) to Ma, and Ga(k) to Sa. The transitions must be seamless.
  2. Dwell on the Ma: Since Ma is the Vadi swara, practice sustaining it. It should sound luminous and powerful.
  3. Vocal Weight: This raga requires a full-throated, resonant voice (Kharaj). Practice long, sustained lower-octave notes (Mandra Saptak) to build this depth.
