The 1-4-5 Chord Progression: The Secret of Every Pop Song

Every major scale has 7 notes. Let's look at the C Major scale:

C (1) - D (2) - E (3) - F (4) - G (5) - A (6) - B (7)

We can build a chord starting on each of these notes. The chords built on the 1st, 4th, and 5th notes are major chords, and they are the absolute pillars of modern music.

• The 1 Chord (I): The Home base. In C major, this is the C Major Chord.
• The 4 Chord (IV): The Journey. In C major, this is the F Major Chord.
• The 5 Chord (V): The Tension. In C major, this is the G Major Chord.

The Magic of I - IV - V

If you play C major, then F major, then G major, and back to C major, you have just played the most common chord progression in human history. It sounds completely resolved, happy, and natural.

Adding the Secret Ingredient: The 6 Chord (vi)

If you want to play modern pop music (Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Arijit Singh), you need to add one minor chord to the mix: the 6 chord (vi). In C Major, the 6th note is A, making the A minor chord.

If you play 1 - 5 - 6 - 4 (C major, G major, A minor, F major), you can now play:

• 'Let It Be' by The Beatles
• 'Someone Like You' by Adele
• 'Tum Hi Ho' (Aashiqui 2 - with slight variations)
• 'Pani Da Rang'
