The Tabla is one of the most expressive percussion instruments in the world — a pair of hand drums capable of producing over 100 distinct sounds. Buying your first Tabla is an exciting but important decision. The wrong choice can make learning frustrating; the right one will make every practice session a joy. Here is the complete guide from our faculty at Sukoon Music Academy.
Understanding the Tabla: Dayan and Bayan
A Tabla is actually two drums played together:
- Dayan (right drum): The smaller, higher-pitched drum made from wood. Played with the dominant hand. Produces the crisp, tunable 'Na', 'Tin', 'Te', and 'Re' strokes.
- Bayan (left drum): The larger, bass drum made from metal (usually copper or brass). Produces the deep 'Ge', 'Ka', and 'Dha' strokes that give Tabla its bass resonance.
The combination of these two drums is what makes the Tabla capable of producing the complex rhythmic patterns (Taals) of Hindustani classical music.
What to Check Before Buying a Tabla
1. The Pudi (Skin Quality)
The 'Pudi' is the drum head. It consists of multiple layers of skin and a central black paste called the 'Syahi' (or Gab). The Syahi is what gives the Dayan its tunable, melodic quality. Check that the Syahi is:
- Perfectly round and centered on the drum head
- Smooth without cracks or peeling edges
- Firm but not rigidly hard to the touch
2. Tuning Capability
A good Tabla should be tunable to Sa (the tonic of the singer or accompanying instrument). Check this by striking the edge of the Dayan — you should get a clear, resonant sound. The Bayan should produce a deep, warm bass when you press your palm into the center while striking the edge.
3. Wood Quality (Dayan)
The best Dayans are made from Sheesham (Rosewood) or Teak wood. Avoid cheap plywood Dayans — they warp easily and produce a hollow, unsatisfying sound. For beginners, a sheesham Dayan in the ₹2,000–₹4,000 range is the sweet spot.
4. Metal Quality (Bayan)
Bayans come in copper, brass, and aluminium. Copper Bayans produce the richest, warmest bass — they are preferred by professional players. For beginners, a brass Bayan at ₹1,500–₹2,500 offers excellent sound quality at an accessible price point.
Recommended Tabla Sets for Beginners (2026)
Budget Range: ₹3,000–₹5,000
At this price point, look for sets from Maharaja Musicals or Radha Krishna Sharma from Varanasi. These artisan-made sets offer genuine skin heads (not synthetic), sheesham Dayans, and brass Bayans — sufficient quality for 1-2 years of serious beginner practice.
Mid Range: ₹5,000–₹10,000
At this range, you access professional-grade craftsmanship. Sets from Varanasi and Delhi artisans at this price point will last for years and can be taken to performances. Look for copper Bayans in this range — the sonic improvement is immediately noticeable.
What to Avoid
Avoid Tabla sets sold on platforms like Amazon and Flipkart under ₹2,000. These almost universally use synthetic (plastic) heads that cannot be properly tuned and produce a sharp, unpleasant sound. A Tabla that cannot be tuned cannot teach you the fundamental skill of matching your pitch to the tanpura — a core requirement of online Hindustani music classes.
Accessories You Will Need
- Tabla Hammer (Thaapi): For tuning the Dayan. Essential.
- Ring Cushions (Bayan and Dayan rings): Placed under each drum to keep them stable while playing.
- Cover/bag: To protect the Pudi from dust and moisture when not in use.
- Ghee or Almond oil: Apply sparingly to the Pudi monthly to prevent cracking in dry weather.
