Sheet music looks like a secret code, but it is actually a brilliant, logical graph of pitch and time. While many modern keyboard players learn via YouTube tutorials (Synthesia), learning to read sheet music is mandatory in our online piano classes because it unlocks hundreds of years of classical and contemporary repertoire.
Here is the absolute beginner's guide to reading notes on the staff.
The Staff
Music is written on a Staff, which consists of 5 horizontal lines and 4 spaces between them. Notes are placed either on the lines or in the spaces. The higher the note sits on the staff, the higher the pitch.
The Treble Clef (Right Hand)
The swirling symbol at the start of the top staff is the Treble Clef. It is usually played by your right hand and contains notes above Middle C.
- The Lines (Bottom to Top): E, G, B, D, F.
- Mnemonic: Every Good Boy Does Fine.
- The Spaces (Bottom to Top): F, A, C, E.
- Mnemonic: It literally spells the word FACE!
The Bass Clef (Left Hand)
The symbol that looks like a backward 'C' with two dots on the bottom staff is the Bass Clef. It is usually played by your left hand and contains notes below Middle C.
- The Lines (Bottom to Top): G, B, D, F, A.
- Mnemonic: Good Boys Do Fine Always.
- The Spaces (Bottom to Top): A, C, E, G.
- Mnemonic: All Cows Eat Grass.
Ledger Lines (The Middle C)
What happens when a note is too high or too low to fit on the 5 lines? We use Ledger Lines—tiny temporary lines drawn through a note to extend the staff.
Middle C is the most famous ledger line. It sits exactly halfway between the Treble Clef and the Bass Clef. It looks like a note with a tiny mustache sitting below the Treble staff or above the Bass staff.
How to Practice
Do not try to read both hands at once. Read the right hand slowly, find the keys, and play it. Then do the left hand. It is exactly like learning a new language—you have to sound out the letters before you can read the words fluently.
