If you listen to Arijit Singh, Adele, or any professional classical singer, you will notice that when they hold a long note, the pitch gently and rapidly wavers up and down. This is called Vibrato. In our online vocal classes, students constantly ask how to "make" vibrato happen. The secret? You don't make it happen; you allow it to happen.
What is Vibrato?
Vibrato is the natural oscillation of pitch caused by the relaxation of the vocal cords and steady airflow. It is a sign of a healthy, tension-free voice. Fake vibrato (shaking your jaw or moving your stomach violently) is dangerous and sounds unnatural.
Why Can't I Sing With Vibrato Yet?
If your voice is completely straight (like a laser beam), it usually means one of two things:
- You are pushing too much air pressure against your vocal cords.
- There is too much tension in your neck and throat muscles.
Vibrato can only occur in a relaxed throat.
Exercise 1: The "Ghost" Fluctuation
To teach your brain what pitch oscillation feels like, we start manually but gently.
- Sing a comfortable "Ah" note.
- Slowly and intentionally, bend the pitch slightly up and slightly down, like a slow police siren (Ah-uh-Ah-uh).
- Gradually speed up this oscillation without tightening your throat. Keep it relaxed. This simulates the mechanics of vibrato.
Exercise 2: The Laughing Technique
This helps release tension and gets the diaphragm moving.
- Place your hand on your stomach.
- Sing a note and literally laugh on it: "Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha." You should feel your stomach pulsing.
- Now, try to connect the laughs smoothly without stopping the airflow: "Haaaa-aaaa-aaaa." Let the natural pulsing continue.
Exercise 3: The Finger Trick
Sometimes you need a physical trigger to relax.
- Hold a straight note.
- Place two fingers gently on your lower sternum (right below your rib cage) and lightly tap inward with a fast, steady rhythm.
- This tiny change in air pressure can sometimes "jumpstart" the natural vibrato reflex in the vocal cords.
