Digital Exam Revolution: Trinity College London’s Digital Assessment pathway allows music candidates in India, the UK, and 60+ countries to record their performance in a continuous, unedited video and submit it online for worldwide certification with accredited UCAS points.
Understanding the Trinity Digital Performance Syllabus
Trinity College London certifications carry immense weight globally. For UK university applicants, higher Trinity grades (Grade 6 to Grade 8) award valuable UCAS Tariff Points that strengthen university admission applications.
In the digital format, candidates film a continuous, single-take video recital consisting of:
- Three Selected Pieces (List A, B, and C): Demonstrating varied stylistic periods (Baroque/Classical, Romantic, 20th/21st Century or Contemporary Pop/Jazz).
- One Own-Choice Piece or Technical Focus: Showcasing specific technical strengths, lyrical expression, or complex rhythm.
- Technical Work (Scales, Arpeggios, and Studies): Executed at prescribed metronome tempos with precise dynamic articulations (staccato, legato, accentuation).
The 3 Pillars of Trinity Examiner Marking
Examiners evaluate every piece out of 22 to 30 marks using three strict criteria:
1. Fluency & Accuracy
Playing the correct notes and rhythms is baseline. True fluency means rhythmic steadiness without hesitation during position shifts or chord transitions.
2. Technical Control & Tone Production
On the piano: finger independence, weight transfer, and balanced voicing between left hand and right hand melody. On the guitar: clean fingernail contact, thumb rest-strokes, and buzz-free fretboard fingering.
3. Musical Communication & Phrasing
This separates a Merit (75–86 marks) from a Distinction (87–100 marks). Examiners look for dynamic contrast (pianissimo to fortissimo), expressive rubato, and understanding of the historical character of each piece.
Trinity Digital Video Guidelines: Avoiding Disqualification
- Single Unbroken Take: Video must be shot from start to finish without pausing, cuts, cross-fades, or post-production audio filtering.
- Visible Camera Framing: For keyboard/piano: both hands, face in profile, and pedal foot must be clearly visible throughout. For guitar: both fretting and picking hands must remain in frame.
- Audio Fidelity: Ensure room acoustics have minimal reverb. Turn off loud air conditioners, fans, or outside street noises during recording.
