2. Set the Tuning: Open a high-quality digital Tanpura. Set the root note to your scale. Most singers use the "Pa" (Perfect Fifth) tuning. If you are singing a Raag that omits Pa (like Raag Malkauns), you must use the "Ma" (Perfect Fourth) tuning instead.
3. The 'Kharaj' Practice: Early in the morning, play the Tanpura and sit quietly for 2 minutes just listening to the drone. Then, take a deep breath and sing a long, steady "Sa". Focus entirely on making your voice completely disappear into the sound of the Tanpura. If you hear a "wobble" or "beating" sound, you are slightly off-pitch.
